Grant Opportunities for Trails

MassTrails Grants - MassTrails provides matching grants to communities, public entities, Native nations, and non-profit organizations to plan, design, create, and maintain the diverse network of trails, trail systems, and trails experiences used and enjoyed by Massachusetts residents and visitors. Technical Assistance Program (TAP) - The MAPC Technical Assistance Program (TAP) is an annual funding program that enables and assists cities and towns in implementing projects that are beneficial to the community. Municipalities are invited to submit project concepts for work to be undertaken by MAPC through the TAP. MAPC accepts applications on a rolling basis. Funding is typically awarded in early spring and fall. Learn more.

Massachusetts Land and Water Conservation Fund Grant Program – Administered through the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) - Division of Conservation Services, this grant provides up to 50% of a total project cost for acquisition, development, and renovation of parks, trails, conservation areas for eligible entities and projects. Learn more.

Shared Streets and Spaces Program -  Administered by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). This program is to provide funding to municipalities and public transit authorities for implementing improvements to bus stops, parking areas, streets, curbs, plazas, sidewalks, and other public spaces. This program is in support of public health, safe mobility, and strengthened commerce. Learn more.

Local Early and Actionable Planning (LEAP) Program -Administered by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). Provides support (planning and early-design support) to municipalities for transportation infrastructure projects. MassDOT's support will include capacity building for transportation projects, department staff support, and on-call staff support. Learn more.

Rails to Trails Conservancy Grants  - Through its grant programs, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) emphasizes strategic investments that support significant regional and community trail development goals. Through these relatively small investments, they help complete and connect trails, improve the trail user experience and support local organizations dedicated to new and existing trails across the country. The Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) program provides a funding source for State and local governments to fund transportation projects and programs to help meet the requirements of the Clean Air Act (CAA). CMAQ funds support state and locally selected transportation projects that reduce mobile source emissions in both current and former areas designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to be in nonattainment or maintenance of the national ambient air quality standards for ozone, carbon monoxide, and/or particulate matter. Municipal ADA Improvement Grant Program provides reimbursement funding to Massachusetts cities and towns to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. Funding supports updating a municipality’s ADA Self Evaluation and Transition plans and making capital improvements that improve access or remove barriers in municipal programs, services, and facilities. The MassWorks Infrastructure Program is a competitive grant program that provides the largest and most flexible source of capital funds to municipalities and other eligible public entities primarily for public infrastructure projects that support and accelerate housing production, spur private development, and create jobs throughout the Commonwealth.
