MCRT Partners

A complete, multi-use trail across Massachusetts provides people and communities with safe, healthy recreation and transportation, robust economic opportunities and opportunities to connect with each other and with nature.

Building the backbone of a world-class trail system in MA takes an exceptional network of passionate people. The MCRT Alliance is driving progress through a shared commitment.

DCR and MassTrails – Key to MCRT Success

The Mass Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has been a key partner to the MCRT since the DEM acquired the Norwottuck Trail in 1979 – this spurred interest in a cross-state trail. The Wayside section of the MCRT, built by DCR in a mostly cooperative agreement with Eversource, is now 75% complete over 24 miles. And DCR’s water supply protection collaboration has led to the completion of over 25 miles of MCRT in Clinton, Sterling, West Boylston, Holden, Rutland and Barre.

MassTrails, an inter-agency initiative working in collaboration with the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, the Department of Transportation, and the DCR is a valued partner of the MCRT. MassTrails provides advice, encouragement and expertise to trail groups and MCRT supporters. They have also provided over 60 MassTrails grants to the MCRT over the past 20 years, supporting trail development in all 27 communities along the MCRT.
