Wachusett Greenways
Created in 1995, Wachusett Greenways (WG) is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization working to connect the Wachusett community with trails and greenways for non-motorized recreation and historic preservation.

The WG is a longstanding stakeholder in the Mass Central Rail Trail Alliance, managing and maintaining the MCRT running through Barre, Oakham, Rutland, Holden, West Boylston and Sterling.
The Wachusett Greenways’ section of the MCRT stretches along more than 30 miles in the Wachusett/Ware region through six towns: Barre, Oakham, Rutland, Holden, West Boylston and Sterling. In 30 years, Wachusett Greenways has completed and stewards more than twenty miles. There are 19 parking areas at MCRT trailheads and nine portable restroom locations.
Each mile of the trail offers natural beauty passing over ten bridges and through two tunnels and along multiple ponds and streams including the Quinapoxet River which empties into the Wachusett Reservoir. The Wachusett Greenways section of the MCRT is paved with gravel and a top coat of compacted stone dust. Wachusett Greenways continues constructing and stewarding the central MCRT in alliance with DCR Division of Watershed Protection, eight Wachusett Towns (including Paxton and Princeton), MassTrails, several Worcester area foundations, local businesses, and many individual members, volunteers and donors.
All are welcome on the MCRT, free and open during daylight hours. Visitors on the trail will see families, groups and individuals enjoying the trail with running shoes, walking sticks, bicycles of all kinds, wheel chairs, strollers, cross-country skis, snow shoes and more. Wildlife viewing includes a wide range of birds, wildflowers, woodland trees, turtles, deer and the occasional bear, moose or snake.
Services such as restaurants, food and snack stores, ice cream, auto fuel, libraries, schools, churches and more trails and parks are located in each town a short or moderate distance from the trail.
